VARIOUS EXPRESSION TYPES WITHIN MODERN TAPESTRY PRACTICES

The terms “tapestry”, “tapet” and “gobelin” are used for pictorial fabrics that reflect a figurative expression. Notwithstanding that there are various examples that are produced with different types of production techniques in textile, the tapestries are defined as woven pictures. Despite its practical evolution rooted during ancient period, the development of tapestry art accelerated after 14th century. As one of the basic practical methods, rug technique, along with the textile materials are used for tapestry weaving. Weft yarns are the main elements on the surface views of tapestries due to the fact that the weft-surface weaving structure is used in rug technique. In practice, discontinuous wefts are used for each and every color as deemed required within the scope of the design, thus having the opportunity to not limit the number of colors to be used in tapestry weaving. Examining the modern samples, it can be seen that the artists have diversified their expressions with regards to the material usage and personal interventions except for the use of rug technique and textile materials. In the study, it is aimed at analyzing the modern tapestry weaving in terms of technical and material aspects through samples, as well as presenting the ensampling of various expression types. Given that the tapestry art will continue to develop in time and evolve within the scope of various aspects, it is thought that this study will contribute in the field by means of identifying its current status.
