Today, the environmental problems brought by the climate crisis necessitate that collectively designers and manufacturers act more consciously about the materials they use in the design & production process, and that consumers act more consciously in their purchasing behaviors. In recent years, eco-friendly and sustainable approaches have begun to find more place in almost every field of design. In the context of graphic designing, packaging emerges as a design product that acts as a communication tool and enables interaction between the designer and the consumer. Considering that the technological advancements and the increase in practical solutions for needs have led to almost every product being packaged, sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions that do not harm nature became highly important in the packaging industry. In this research, within the scope of the GRF304 “Packaging Design II” course at Yalova University, Faculty of Art and Design, Department of Graphic Design, students were given a project topic to be created using only cardboard material, and they were asked to plan their designs by considering sustainable and eco-friendly approaches. The research was also supported by a survey conducted to measure the students’ knowledge about the concept of sustainability before and after the study. This practice with students is important in terms of questioning the awareness of cardboard material used in the packaging industry, measuring its usability, and creating awareness regarding its contribution to sustainability. The aim of the study is to convey the importance of the concept of sustainability to students within the scope of the packaging design course and to present an evaluation based on the survey results.
