This article examines the construction of visual perception in the context of graphic design by addressing the concepts of visual readability and interface aesthetics as an integrated whole in the design of visually-rich books. In book formats where images function not merely alongside text but as perceptual carriers of meaning, it becomes essential to strategically manage multi-layered design components such as typography, color, page layout, hierarchy, whitespace, and physical materials. The study begins with the traditional notions of readability and legibility, expanding these concepts within the context of image-based publications, and explores the aesthetic and problematic decisions that emerge from a design perspective.
Furthermore, the article investigates how visual cues, graphic hierarchy, typographic structure, page construction, eye movement, and color-contrast relationships direct reader attention and influence the process of meaning-making. The sequencing, scaling, and contextual integration of visual elements—not just textual ones—are discussed through examples, illustrating how information transmission is shaped in book design. Within the framework of user-centered design principles, the cognitive and experiential dimensions of design are also revealed. By addressing the sensory nature of the physical book object and its distinction from digital formats, the study evaluates how visually-rich books are constructed as aesthetic interfaces. This work aims to offer a comprehensive theoretical framework that identifies core design principles that enhance readability and guide perception in visually-driven publications. Ultimately, it argues that design transcends a purely functional role and can be understood as a strategic structure that positions the book as an object of art.
