19. yüzyıl ortalarından itibaren, sanatçılar dış dünyanın nesnel gerçekliklerinden çok iç dünyalarının öznel gerçekliklerini betimlemeye başladıklarında, kullandıkları yöntem ve tekniklerin de değiştiği ve çeşitlendiği görülür. Bu yöntem ve tekniklerden birisi de suluboya tekniğidir. Suluboya, su bazlı renkli boyalarla kâğıt veya benzer yüzeylere uygulanan ve sanat tarihinde köklü bir geçmişe sahip olan bir tekniktir ve modern sanatta sanatçıların kendilerini ifade etmede etkili bir araca dönüşmüştür. Suluboya tekniğinin modern sanattaki betimlemelerde, dönemin sanatçıları tarafından sıkça kullanılan bir araç haline gelmesinde; tekniğin sanatçılara içten ve samimi çalışma kolaylığı sağlaması yanında hızlı ve özgün bir biçimde tasarımlar yapmalarının büyük etkisi olmuştur. Bu makalede, modern sanatın başlangıcı olarak kabul edilen 1860’lı yıllardan 1960’lı yıllara kadar devam eden modern sanat sürecindeki akımlar içerisinde suluboya ile ifadeci çalışmalar yapmış olan önemli sanatçılar ele alınmıştır. Her sanat akımından birer sanatçı ve eser ele alınarak modern dönemde suluboya tekniğini bir ifade aracı olarak nasıl kullanıldığı araştırılmıştır. Ele alınan sanatçıların temsil ettiği sanat anlayışlarını ve kendi üslup özelliklerini yansıtan ifade biçimlerini suluboya tekniği ile nasıl ortaya koydukları, Collingwood ve Croce’nin ifadeci kuramları çerçevesinde ele alınarak incelenmeye çalışılmıştır.
Since the mid-19th century onwards, when artists began to abandon the objective realities of the external world and started to depict the subjective realities of their inner worlds, it can be seen that the methods and techniques they used also changed and diversified. One of these methods and techniques is watercolor. Watercolor, as a technique applied with water-based colored paints on paper or similar surfaces, has a deep-rooted history in art and has become an effective tool for artists to express themselves in modern art. The technique of watercolor, becoming a commonly used tool in the depictions of modern art by the artists of the period, greatly facilitated artists' ability to work sincerely and spontaneously, allowing them to create designs quickly and originally. This article addresses significant artists who created expressive works with watercolor within the movements of the modern art process, which is considered to have started in the 1860s and continued through the 1960s. By examining one artist and one work from each art movement, it has been investigated how the watercolor technique was used as a means of expression in the modern period. The expressive forms that reflect the artistic understandings and stylistic characteristics of the artists discussed were examined within the framework of Collingwood and Croce's expressive theories.
