Osmanlı tarihi boyunca süsleme ve bezeme programları arasında Minyatür’ün özel bir yeri vardır. Çeşitli konuları işleyen Minyatürler doğrudan Padişahın zaferlerini yansıtan eserlerdir. Minyatürlerin hem resmetme sanatı hem de sanatla tarihi belgeleme ifadesi kuşkusuz minyatürü özellikli kılmaktadır. Minyatür konuları içerisinde zafernâmeler, şahnâmeler ve gazavatnâmeler ayrı bir yer tutar. Minyatür sanatını Osmanlı’da en iyi ve mükemmel ifade eden sanatçılar arasında Matrakçı gelmekte ve eserlerinde Osmanlı’da geçen her önemli olayı şehir kurgusu ve mimarisi içerisinde kurgulamasıyla bilinir. XVI. Yüzyılda yetişmiş önemli bir bilim insanı olan ve "Matrakçi" lakabıyla tanınan Nasuh B. Abdullah’ın, II. Beyazıd döneminin sonlarında Enderun’da gördüğü eğitimin dışında hayatı hakkında çok az bilgi bulunduğu, minyatür denince dünyada akla ilk gelen kişi olduğunu söyleyebiliriz. Matrakçı, müşahede ve kayıt hususundaki kabiliyetlerini, bir minyatürcü olarak çok mükemmel bir şekilde ortaya koymuş, ancak bir yazar olarak bu resimlerle ilgili fazla bilgi vermemiştir. Bununla tarihçiliği açıkça belli olan sanatkâr, şehir resimleriyle aynı zamanda önemli bir şehircilik analizcisi olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Böylece çağdaş bir bilginin ve çok mahir bir sanatçının gözü ile XVI. yüzyıl Yakın Doğu şehirlerinin oldukça tam denebilecek bir koleksiyonunu görmek fırsatını elde etmiş bulunuyoruz. Matrakçı’nın minyatürlerinde, sembolizmin ortaya konduğunu söyleyebiliriz. Sevdiği bir kompozisyon tekniği ile kıyı¬larında şehirlerin yerleşmiş bulunduğu nehir ve suların devamlılığını sayfalarında göstermektedir. Şehircilik tarihinin ilgi çekici konularından birisi, düzenlilik, estetik kaygısı ile zaman ve mekân içinde yapıcıların uygulayabilecekleri plan ölçüleri ile ilgili delillerdir. Şehircilik anlayışı içerisinde gelişen düzenlilik ölçütü, yalnızca sosyal, kültürel ve ekonomik açıdan değil estetik açıdan da algısal ve sezgisel anlam boyutu da taşımalıdır. Bu bakımdan Matrâkçının minyatürlerinde görülen form ile ilgili özelliklerin başında tahkim edilmiş sur sistemi ve paralelinde gelişen kent ve mimari gelmektedir.

Miniature had a special place among ornament and adornment programs during Ottoman history. Miniatures handling various subjects are works of art which directly reflect victories of the sultan. Miniature is both the art of depiction and documentation of art and history. These two make it special. Zafername, Şahname and Gazavatname have important roles among the miniature subjects. Matrakçı is one of the best miniaturists of Ottoman Empire and he is known to fictionalize each important event in the Ottoman Period with urban fiction and architecture. Nasuh B. Abdullah is a noteworthy scientist educated in the 16th century and he is known as Matrakçı. We have a nodding acquaintance with Matrakçı except his education in the Enderun School towards the end of reign of Beyazıd II. We can say that he is the first one who comes to mind when the subject is miniature. Matrakçı reveals his talents for scopy and registration terrifically as a miniaturist but he doesn’t give enough information about those pictures as a writer. Therefore, It’s crystal clear that the craftsman is a historian and he is also an urbanism analyser with his urban pictures. Thanks to him, we have an opportunity to see the near east collections in the 16th century in a modern scholar and a wise artist’s eyes. It can be said that Matrakçı refers to the symbolism in his works. In his writings, he describes the continuity of the rivers and waters on the coasts of which there are cities with a composition technique that he likes. An interesting subject of urban planning history is the evidences about plan measurements of regularity, aesthetic concerns, time and place for which the builders can apply. Orderlines criterion centering upon sense of urbanism needs to have not only in terms of social, cultural and economic but aesthetic, perceptual and intuitional meanings as well. For this reason, fortified wall system is the primary feature about form that can be seen in the miniatures of Matrakçı and the growing city and architecture comes in paralel with it.
