AN ANALYSIS ON THE VISUALS IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOL FIRST GRADE MATHEMATICS TEXTBOOKS IN TERMS OF DESİGN


In this study, the visuals in the firstgrade mathematics textbook prepared by the Ministry of National Education were examined in terms of form and content. In this study, which was carried out with the document analysis method, the classification of Carney and Levin (2002), which adapted to the mathematics teaching by Elia and Philippou (2004), was taken as reference. On the basis of this classification, a total of 25 images, 5 decorative, 5 representative, 5 organizational, 5 informative and 5 transformational were selected from the book with the cluster sampling method. The images included in the research were examined according to the themes developed regarding the form and content considering the “Draft Textbook and Education Tools and Criteria to be Based on the Evaluation of the E-Content Related to Them” prepared by the Ministry of National Education. According to the obtained results, problems with visual first grade in elementary school mathematics textbook raised by many researchers in Turkey were partially dissolved in the new textbooks.
