ICONIC ARTIST TRACEY EMIN AND THE SIGNATURE-SCIENTIFIC ANALYSIS OF THEIR WORKS

Abstract

Tracey Emin, a member of the "Young British Artists" (BritArtists: BYA), whose father is of Turkish Cypriot origin and whose mother is British, born in London in 1963, has become one of the internationally known artists of England with her autobiographical works. Tracey Emin's "Neo-Conceptualist" post-feminist sensational works, in which she is the subject of her own life by the British and international art community, focuses on the individual, therefore social meaning rather than the artistic object, concepts of identity, gender, otherness, violence, migration, homelessness. It has been shaped by practices that examine the social codes shaped by certain power relations at the origin. Presenting his own life to the audience through his works, the artist directs the art audience to read the sub-meanings hidden by the common stereotypes and value judgments on the social ground. The waste objects that Tracey Emin uses in her art, which have her own body and experience, represent concepts rather than art objects. She refers to the body or plastic object, the signified as signifier, meaning meanings, by fusing image and sign, form and meaning with each other. When the masses or body of the artist in his works are presented in the position of "signifier" as a work of art in legitimate spaces, it transforms into the position of "signified", which represents the hypocrisy, disgust, violence and pain of life as meaning. The relationship between the "signifier" and the "signified" is considered as a complementary element between the material and the work. In this context, Tracey Emin tries to make the audience question life and the order they live in in a sensational and provocative way by reflecting the negativities she experiences in society as an individual, with the view that the “personal” cannot be separated from the social. When the works of the artist are analyzed semiologically, the critical attitude of the artist that he realizes by revealing his tragic life, rebelling against the society and order, in short, the system in which he lives, will be read. The semiotic analysis of the life and works of the artist Tracey Emin, who constitutes the content of the research, has been examined in the historical process of art from past to present, and the data revealed are discussed through the texts and articles written by the artist himself. The findings were supported with sample artworks within the chapters, and a general evaluation of the subject was presented in the conclusion section.
