On the Installation Artworks of Contemporary Turkish Artists, About Women, Gender and Migration


The purpose of the text titled “On the Installation Artworks of Contemporary Turkish Artists About Women, Gender and Migration” is to focus on women who have proven themselves because their works are exhibited in major exhibitions and projects that can be seen as a breaking point in the development process of Turkish Contemporary Art, such as the biennial, and their artworks are included in important museums and private collections. The aim of the study is to research and analyze the installation productions of artists on gender, discrimination, view of women, migration and displacement.

By not using the phrase "female artist" consciously in the title, goal was to avoid making the gender distinction which the artists in question have criticized within their artworks under the title of social inequality.

In this article, installations of Turkish contemporary artists Nil Yalter, Gülsün Karamustafa, Şükran Moral, Canan and Nilbar Güreş are discussed in chronological order. The artists featured in the article shed light on different problems of the period in their installations. It has been examined whether there will be a connection between the major projects selected from each artist, the choices they made in their art life, their orientations and afterwards. Common points have been found on the change experienced by individuals, especially with the discrimination and migration in the society.
