ASSESSMENT OF COLOR CHANGES IN SOME MATERIALS USED IN EBRU ART

Abstract

It is thought that the art of Ebru, whose materials are widely accessible today, emerged with the efforts to color the paper. Examples used as endpapers and pages in old manuscript book bindings have survived to the present day. Within the framework of manuscript arts, although most of the manuscripts have inscriptions, there is generally no information about Ebru practices and other various arts that take an active role in the production of the work. Its diversity in terms of colorants and thickeners and its commercial availability have increased considerably. It is aimed to determine the light fastness of colorants, which are currently offered as commercial commodities to artists or students, claiming that they provide the need of natural colorants in the art markets. Consequently, in this study, it has been tried to evaluate the color changes and UV (ultraviolet) aging results of Ebru samples made in a certain style by choosing a certain group of accessible materials. Accordingly, it can be observed which colorant has higher saturation, which thickener affects higher saturation and which colorant-thickener combinations show less change in UV-aging.
