Floral Patterns And Their Application In The Art Of Ebrû (Marbling)


Ebru, known as the art of paper decoration in Turkish Decorative Arts, is a work of art obtained by sprinkling paints on water condensed with tragacanth and similar substances, with the help of special brushes, and transferring the patterns that occur there to the paper. There are many types of marbling such as Battal, Tide, Shawl, Nightingale's Nest, Scalloped, Hatib, Flowered, Written, Akkase, Sandy-Awned. Flower experiments in Floral Ebru, which is one of the varieties of Ebru art, dates back to ancient times. These essays are more of a wildflower style. Ebru master, Hatib Mehmet Efendi, is the basis of the floral Ebru forms. The Ebru style, which he created by putting drops of different colors together on a light background and moving with thin wire or a single horsehair, was very popular and started to be known by his own name. Another important stage in the Floral Ebru experiments is that Necmeddin Okyay painted many flowers on the boat by semi-stylizing them. From now on, Ebrus with flowers began to be called "Necmeddin Ebrus". Today, semi-stylized and naturalistic flowers are applied with the knowledge of color and color perspective as much as the technique of Ebru (marbling) art allows.

Various studies have been carried out on the art of Ebru. These studies mostly focus on existing information such as the history of the art of Ebru, its artists, the materials used, its application, its types, or its application on different materials. In this article, the flower types preferred in Floral Ebru, which is one of the types of Ebru art, and the patterns, design features (semi-stylized and naturalistic style) of these flowers and their application are studied as the subject. In this direction, 9 flower types that are most used in Ebru art were determined, and how these flowers were applied by supporting the patterns with schematic drawings and photographs after the application was explained. These flowers are tulips, roses, carnations, violets, hyacinths, poppies, daisies, sprigs and wildflowers. They are used lovingly in other fields of Turkish ornament arts. The determined flower patterns were drawn schematically in the computer environment. The circles expressing the paints left in the form of drops in the drawing and the biz (wire rod) movements to be made to shape these circles are expressed with arrows. Finally, by applying these floral patterns in my own workshop, floral Ebrus were created. Photographs of the Floral Ebrus I have made have been taken and added to the article. Thus, the final state of the application phase of floral ebrus has been embodied.
