A RESEARCH ON THE DETERMINATION OF USER-ORIENTED POTTER'S LATHE DESIGN CRITERIA WITH ACADEMICIANS

Abstract

The potter's lathe has been one of the most important shaping tools from the past to the present day. The first samples were made of wood, clay and basalt stone. It consisted of a round table in shape, which was rotated by hand. Samples have also been used over time which made of similar materials and rotated with the foot. In some geographies, examples of potter's lathes turned by a helper with a rod or reel have been found. In some geographies, examples of potter's lathes have been found which turned by a helper with a rod or reel. Together with the developing technology because of the potter user-oriented requirements (ergonomics, functionality, speed, durability, etc) they underwent until today. The most important factors triggering these changes have been user expectations. Because users have always wanted to continue their work with more ergonomic, more functional, more aesthetic products.

Within the scope of this study, it was aimed to determine the satisfaction levels of potters' lathe users towards the existing lathes and their expectations from the potters' lathe. For this purpose, face-to-face interviews consisting of five semi-structured questions were conducted for the user group consisting of 12 academicians (Appendix-1).

As a result of the analysis of the interviews, the problems of existing lathes and the expectations of users from a potter's lathe with a successful design were revealed and tabulated. (Appendix-2).
