ON URBAN ARTHITECTURE AND SENSE OF AESTHETICS IN THE MINIATURES OF MATRAKÇI NASUH


Miniature had a special place among ornament and adornment programs during Ottoman history. Miniatures handling various subjects are works of art which directly reflect victories of the sultan. Miniature is both the art of depiction and documentation of art and history. These two make it special. Zafername, Şahname and Gazavatname have important roles among the miniature subjects. Matrakçı is one of the best miniaturists of Ottoman Empire and he is known to fictionalize each important event in the Ottoman Period with urban fiction and architecture. Nasuh B. Abdullah is a noteworthy scientist educated in the 16th century and he is known as Matrakçı. We have a nodding acquaintance with Matrakçı except his education in the Enderun School towards the end of reign of Beyazıd II. We can say that he is the first one who comes to mind when the subject is miniature. Matrakçı reveals his talents for scopy and registration terrifically as a miniaturist but he doesn’t give enough information about those pictures as a writer. Therefore, It’s crystal clear that the craftsman is a historian and he is also an urbanism analyser with his urban pictures. Thanks to him, we have an opportunity to see the near east collections in the 16th century in a modern scholar and a wise artist’s eyes. It can be said that Matrakçı refers to the symbolism in his works. In his writings, he describes the continuity of the rivers and waters on the coasts of which there are cities with a composition technique that he likes. An interesting subject of urban planning history is the evidences about plan measurements of regularity, aesthetic concerns, time and place for which the builders can apply. Orderlines criterion centering upon sense of urbanism needs to have not only in terms of social, cultural and economic but aesthetic, perceptual and intuitional meanings as well. For this reason, fortified wall system is the primary feature about form that can be seen in the miniatures of Matrakçı and the growing city and architecture comes in paralel with it.
